Revision Arthroplasty Using Hydroxylapatite Coated Implants

By R.G.T. Geesink M.D., Ph.D. Epinette, J.A. M.D.

Hydroxylapatite Coated Hip and Knee Arthroplasty. Paris, Expansion Scientifique Francaise, 1995, p 302

The excellent clinical results of implant fixation using HA-coatings have been discussed before. They relate to the good osteoconductive properties of HA, resulting in well-fixed implants. Application in revision surgery is more challenging. Often there are significant bone deficiencies and under these circumstances HA can be pushed to its limit of clinical application.

Although single observations, fifty cases with follow-up of five to seven years proves the great potential of HA-coatings, especially under difficult circumstances. In general, the experience with HA-coated implants in revisional surgery is still limited. The clinical results are, however, very satisfying and the radiologically visible restoration of bone stock offers a good perspective for future implant performance and endurance points to the excellent osseo-integration properties of HA, even under clinical adverse conditions of revision arthroplasty.
